What drives the cost of custom cabinetry in Perth?
Two kitchens the same size can differ in price by half. Here is where the money actually goes — carcasses, doors, hardware, benchtops, install — and how to read a quote so you spend it where it shows.

Where the money goes
Every custom cabinetry quote is really six smaller quotes added together: the cabinet boxes, the doors and visible panels, the hardware inside, the benchtop, the installation, and the design and project management that holds it together. Understanding the rough weight of each is the fastest way to work out where your budget is going and where it can move.
- Carcasses (the boxes). A modest share of the total. Ours are high-moisture-resistant board with ABS edging as standard — the difference between a kitchen that shrugs off a leaking dishwasher and one that swells.
- Doors, drawer fronts and panels. The biggest single variable. Finish choice can move this line by a factor of two or three.
- Hardware. Hinges, drawer runners, lift-up mechanisms, internal fittings. Drawers cost more than doors but are used far more.
- Benchtop. Anything from laminate to porcelain to natural stone, templated after the cabinets are in.
- Installation. Our own Perth team, plus coordination of the plumber, electrician and stone mason.
- Design and project management. Measured drawings, 3D views, the fixed quote, the ordering, the schedule.
Door finishes: the decision that moves the price most
Laminate doors from the Polytec and Laminex ranges are the value benchmark for Perth homes: hundreds of colours and woodgrains, excellent resistance to heat, moisture and sun, and easy to replace one door if it is ever damaged. Thermolaminated (vinyl-wrap) doors — ours are made by Tesrol — sit a step above and allow profiled and shaker-style fronts in one seamless skin. Two-pac polyurethane painted doors, also from Tesrol's factory in any colour you choose, cost the most, give the deepest finish and the exact colour you want, and ask for a little more care around heat and knocks.
Timber veneer and solid timber sit alongside two-pac in cost, and add the variation of a natural material. Our finishes comparison goes through each option in detail. The practical point is this: choose the finish for the doors people touch and see, and consider a simpler finish inside tall units and behind appliance panels where nobody will notice.
Hardware: pay for what you open every day
We specify Blum hinges and runners and Häfele fittings as standard because the difference between good hardware and cheap hardware is felt fifty times a day for twenty years. Soft-close on doors and drawers is no longer a luxury line item; it is expected.
Where hardware costs climb is in drawers versus doors, and in the fittings inside them. A bank of deep pot drawers costs more than a cupboard with two shelves, but it turns the dead space at the back of a cupboard into storage you actually use. Lift-up overhead doors, corner solutions, pull-out pantries and integrated bins are the lines to add or remove when a quote needs to move.
Benchtops after the engineered stone ban
Since 1 July 2024, engineered stone cannot be manufactured, supplied or installed in Australia, which removed the mid-priced default most Perth kitchens used for fifteen years. The options now run from laminate at the entry level, through solid-surface and the new crystalline-silica-free mineral surfaces such as Caesarstone Mineral, to porcelain, sintered stone and natural granite or quartzite at the top. Benchtop choice can easily swing a kitchen quote by more than the doors do, so decide it early. We covered the alternatives properly in our engineered-stone guide.
Layout and site factors
The same cabinetry costs more to install in some homes than others, and an honest quote reflects that rather than surprising you later.
- Islands need finished panels on every side, more benchtop, and often plumbing or power run through the floor.
- Tall units and full-height pantries use more material than base and overhead runs, but replace several smaller cabinets.
- Out-of-square rooms in older Nedlands, Subiaco or Fremantle homes need scribed panels and fillers to sit cleanly against walls that are not straight.
- Apartments in South Perth, Claremont or East Perth add lift bookings, protection of common areas and strata scheduling.
- Moving services — a sink across the room, a new cooktop position — brings in the plumber and electrician for real work, not just reconnection.
How to read a quote
Ask for a fixed, itemised proposal, not a lump sum. Ours lists every cabinet with its size and finish, every hinge and runner by brand and model, the benchtop material and thickness, and the installation and trade coordination as separate lines. That format does two things: it lets you compare quotes fairly, and it lets you adjust the specification — swap two-pac for laminate on the tall units, drop the pull-out pantry, keep the pot drawers — before anything is ordered.
Be wary of quotes that are much cheaper without saying why. The usual reasons are standard board instead of moisture-resistant, unnamed hardware, a benchtop allowance instead of a price, or installation by whoever is available rather than a team that works for the company that designed it.
Spending well: where it shows and where it doesn't
- Spend on the doors at eye level, the benchtop, the hardware you touch, and the drawers you open most.
- Save inside tall units, behind appliance panels, and on cabinet internals where a simpler finish is invisible.
- Keep the sink and cooktop where they are if the layout works — moving services is money you never see.
- Decide finishes early; late changes after ordering cost more than the item itself.
- Get one company to design, quote, supply and install. Every hand-off between businesses is a chance for the price and the responsibility to blur.
The best way to find out what your kitchen, wardrobe or laundry will cost is a free in-home consultation. We measure, talk through how you use the room, and give you a realistic range on the day — then a fixed, itemised proposal a few days later. Book one here.
Common questions
Why do two custom kitchen quotes for the same room differ so much?
Almost always the door finish, the hardware brand, the benchtop material and what board the carcasses are made from. Ask each company to itemise those four things and the gap usually explains itself.
Is a fixed price better than a quote with allowances?
Yes. An allowance for the benchtop or handles is a guess that becomes a variation later. A fixed itemised price for a named specification is what lets you compare fairly and budget with confidence.
Does custom cabinetry cost more than flat-pack?
Upfront, usually. Over the life of the kitchen, the difference narrows sharply: made-to-measure cabinets use the whole room, moisture-resistant board survives Perth kitchens and laundries, and Blum hardware still works in fifteen years. Custom also includes design, delivery, installation and one company responsible for all of it.
Can I reduce the cost without it showing?
Simplify the finish inside tall units and behind appliance panels, choose laminate for cabinets nobody looks at closely, keep the layout and services where they are, and put the budget into the doors, benchtop and drawers you use every day.
